Nowata County Courthouse Overview

Nowata County is a small county in Northeastern Oklahoma located just off highway 169, north of Tulsa. Nowata County is located along the Kansas Oklahoma border. Nowata County is part of the 11th Judicial District which includes Washington County and Bartlesville. The Nowata County seat is the town of Nowata. The courthouse is typically empty when court is not in session and the people that work at the courthouse are friendly and helpful.

The Nowata County Courthouse is located at 229 N Maple Street in Nowata, OK 74048. The courthouse is very old and outdated. Parking is rarely a problem and on most days the courthouse is fairly empty. The Nowata County jail is located right next to the Nowata County Courthouse

Nowata County Criminal Judges and Dockets

Nowata County has a District Judge, Linda Thomas and an Associate District Judge Carl Gibson. District Judge Thomas presides over court mainly in the Washington County, visiting Nowata County a few days a month and during jury trials. While the Associate Judge Gibson has an office in the Nowata County Courthouse generally stays in Nowata County.

Arraignments

Nowata County has a "Daily Docket" that is called everyday at 9:00 am. Initial appearances (Also called Arraignments). Judge Gibson presides over the "Daily Docket" that includes initial appearances/arraignmnets. At the initial appearance Judge Gibson will set a bond, if one has not otherwise been set. At the arraignmnet the judge will inform the defendant what they are charged with and schedule the next hearing.

Preliminary Hearings

In Nowata County the preliminary hearings are scheduled at the initial appearance/arraignment.

Jury Trials

Like many of the counties in Oklahoma, Nowata does not have jury trials year around. Several times a year Nowata will have a "jury term". Typically during the "jury term" most of the other court business is not conducted. Jury trials are typically held for a two to three weeks period during the jury term.

The elected District Attorney for Nowata County is Kevin Buchanan and he has an office in Bartlesville where he is also the elected district attorney of Washington County. Mr. Buchanan comes to Nowata County, but mainly he is in Washington County.
