There are three types of judges in Oklahoma courts. In order of highest authority they are 1. a District Judge 2. an Associate District Judge and 3. a Magistrate Judge or soecial judges.

The magistrate judge is simply a lawyer that was hired by the District and Associate District Judges to handle less important matters. Magistrates do not have jurisdiction to handle felony cases at the trial level, typically magistrates will handle matters such as misdemeanors, preliminary hearings, arraignments and divorces.
